Bedazzling Has Entered The Chat And It Is Not Leaving

Nothing is safe from a rhinestone anymore. After years of minimalism and quiet luxury, maximalism is back. Bright colour is back. And this time it isn't stopping at clothing.

Nothing is safe from a rhinestone anymore. After years of minimalism and quiet luxury, maximalism is back. Bright colour is back.

And this time it isn't stopping at clothing. Jeans, handbags, lip tints, phone cases. If it can hold glue, it can hold a gem. Gen Z is behind it, and they're taking the most ordinary things they own and making them sparkle.

Why now?

It's nostalgia, mostly. Y2K energy meets the arts-and-crafts table, with TikTok turning up the volume.

But there's something else going on.

Everything we own is mass-produced. The same phone, the same flats, the same iced coffee cup as everyone else. Gluing a few gems onto it changes that. Suddenly it's yours, and only yours. The rule is simple: the more hand-made it looks, the better. Crooked stones are part of the charm.

What started as a solo DIY hobby has gone social. Bedazzling workshops and pop-ups are showing up everywhere. Cafés lay out sticker sheets of gems next to the drinks. Friends pull up a chair, pick their stones, and get to work. You leave with a cup, a phone case or a bag that looks like nobody else's.

It's equal parts craft session and hangout. Which might be the real point.

The global obsession has landed in Pakistan, and it landed fast.

You can see it on university campuses and at festive mehndis. On dupattas and hijabs, on clutches and khussas, on phone cases held up for the group photo. Pakistani closets were never shy about shine to begin with. Gota, mirror work, kora and dabka have been doing this for generations. Rhinestones just feel like the newest member of the family. The trend didn't need much convincing. It found its footing here as quickly as anywhere else.

Your caffeine fix isn't safe either.

Bedazzled tumblers and sparkly straws are now part of the daily routine. If it's in your hand all day, it might as well match your aesthetic. And you don't need a pop-up to join in. A quiet night in works just as well. A glue gun, a pack of rhinestones, a sheet mask, your skincare lined up on the bed. Gem the tube. Gem the mask. Gem the bag it all came in.

Full pop-up or quiet night in, the appeal is the same.

Everyone wants something that looks like nobody else's. Maybe that's sweet. Maybe it's a lot. Either way, the glue gun is already warm.

Cute or forced? You decide.
